A Slow Canadian Winter Morning

In Canada, winter mornings start in the dark. By November the sun rises late, and the air outside is sharp. Over the years, people here have built small habits that make those mornings feel softer. None of them take long. Here are five we love.

1) Open the curtains first.

Before the phone, before the kettle. Let whatever light there is into the room, and sit near the window for a minute.

2) Start with something warm.

A mug of warm water, or a cup of tea held in both hands. Canadians call this the easiest way to “thaw out” before the day begins.

3) Take the ten-minute walk.

Bundle up and go around the block. Cold air, crunchy snow, a quiet street. It is less about exercise and more about seeing the morning.

4) Make breakfast a little slower.

Sit down for it. A warm bowl of oats, a spoon of yogurt, fruit, a drizzle of honey. Simple food, eaten without rushing.

5) Keep one thing that feels cozy.

Wool socks, a favourite mug, the same playlist every morning. Small rituals make a long winter feel familiar.

Recipe: Maple-season oat bowl

Warm ½ cup of oats with 1 cup of milk for 4 to 5 minutes. Top with plain yogurt, sliced apple, a pinch of cinnamon and a spoon of creamy native honey.

Winter in Canada is long, but the mornings can be gentle. Pick one habit and try it tomorrow.
